EUROPEAN SOCIALIST AND SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTIES LAUNCH JOINT MANIFESTO FOR EUROPEAN ELECTIONS ’09

WHAT Adoption of Party of European Socialists manifesto for 2009 European elections by member party leaders and delegates


WHEN Monday 1 December 2008 (with the meeting – PES Council - continuing on Tuesday 2 December).


WHERE Madrid, Spain - Auditorium Hotel, Avenida de Aragón, Madrid


WHO Party leaders participating José Luis Zapatero, Franz Munterfering, Martine Aubry, José Sócrates, Ferenc Gyurcsany, Sergei Stanishev, Robert Fico, Borut Pahor, Wouter Bos, Jens Stoltenberg, Elio Di Rupo, Caroline Gennez, Yiannakis Omirou, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Jutta Urpilainen, George Papandreou, Eamon Gilmore, Gediminas Kirkilas, Alex Bodry, Joseph Muscat, Grzegorz Napieralski, Mona Sahlin plus PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and President of PES Women Zita Gurmai.


Leaders are due for the leaders meeting on Sunday evening but are not confirmed for the manifesto adoption on Monday.


The Leaders are among 232 party delegates, plus some 300 grassroots PES activists and many local and international guests. Delegates include Frank Walter Steinmeier, Alfred Gusenbauer, Luis Amado, Jean Asselborn, Juri Pihl, Caroline Flint, Frans Timmermans, Denis MacShane, Hans Eichel, Martin Schulz, Margot Wallstrom and Carin Jamtin.


Other guests include Damon Silvers (member of the Congressional Oversight Panel) and James Galbraith from the US, Tsutomu Okubo from the Democratic Party of Japan and Takeshi Aoki from Japanese trade union JTUC-Rengo.

09.30 – 12.45 Debate: Our PES Manifesto

12.30 – 14.00 Adoption of the Manifesto with José Luis Zapatero, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and PES member party leaders

Each party leader present will speak briefly during the manifesto adoption event

17.00 – 20.00 World Aids Day event, followed by continuation of Debate: Our PES Manifesto

Tuesday 2 December

11.15 – 13.00 Round table & debate on the economic and financial crisis

13.00 – 14.00 Presentation of the election campaign & finale of PES Council
